Moni Winanso Wochokera Kwa Masistere Achimalawi
(Once Again Greetings from the Malawian Sisters)

Many things happened since our last article. The summer has been so hot in comparison with our country, but we enjoyed it more than snow.

sisters in a canoeGeorge Thatcher and Sr. Mary Elizabeth. Another interesting place we went with the Bishop wasto the Bronx Zoo. We saw a lot of animals, some of them we have in our country but some we don’t have. We were so excited to see the gorillas and watch the way they behaved. Also we were so happy because Sr. Mary Basil accompanied us. She was able to explain to us some of the changes that have taken place at this Zoo.

This summer we went for our vacation with Sr. Mary Elizabeth to Barry Retreat House. It was wonderful because we did so many interesting things there. Some of our activities were: canoeing, where we crossed Brant Lake to the other side, swimming and visiting other Lakes like: Lake George, Lake Champlain. We drove to Vermont where we took a ferry boat and crossed Lake Champlain from Riding the ferryVermont to New York. We were very excited because at home we don’t have ferry boats, we just have passenger ships and cargo ships. We went to Clinton County Fair in Plattsburgh, NY and a fair in Saratoga. We saw Irish dancing and horse back riding. We saw a very tall man on stilts and one of us was afraid of him, as you will find out as we go on. We had a ride on the ferris wheel which we enjoyed. Sister Martha was afraid of that so she chose to take pictures. We really enjoyed our rest. We loved Fr. Dennis Pressley and his wife Veronica for the hospitality they showed us and we are hoping to visit them again.

On the 26th of August after long retreat Sister Martha made her Junior Promises. The ceremony was held at Sunday Mass with Bishop Biggers as the celebrant. We were so glad because it is one of the historical events of our new community. On the next day, we had a barbecue to celebrate Sister Martha’s Juniorate and Bishop Biggers’ Bon Voyage party. In one part we were happy for Sr. Martha and one part we were sorry because Bishop Biggers was leaving. Although we were sorry, we remembered the reason that we are here is to serve God.

On the 27th of August during the provincial chapter we were very excited because the Sisters of St. Mary accepted us as part of the Community of St Mary, we will no longer be a separate community but the Community of St Mary, Malawi. Novices at the chapel of Christ the Light

This fall, we have a new class schedule. We are now going to learn new skills like Computers, First Aid, Accounting, Arts and Crafts, Embroidery, Sewing and Cards. We have already started making cards and made some on the Labor Day Retreat. Many people liked them, and we are hoping to make some for Christmas, Thanksgiving and all seasons. We are saving the money to help pay for our new convent.

Finally, we wish to offer thanks to all our friends who are supporting us. We hope that you will continue praying for us even when we go back home. We appreciate all your prayers so that we may have this opportunity to learn to become sisters.

GOD BLESS YOU ALL!!
